village of acebuchal

Hey there curious adventurers! Have you ever heard of the hidden gem called El Acebuchal? Located amidst the breathtaking Sierras de Tejada, Almijara y Alhama, this tiny village awaits explorers like you. Be enchanted by the history and unspoiled beauty of this piece of Andalusia as we travel together.

History of El Acebuchal: A story that defies time

As you wander through the winding paths of El Acebuchal, you will find that the stones whisper with stories of times gone by. Until 1949, this small village was a hotbed of activity, producing charcoal and limestone. Here traders gathered, laden with fish, vegetables and fruit, accompanied by faithful mules. The most surprising thing? The inhabitants lived here for two centuries without electricity and modern gadgets. Archaeological finds reveal habitation dating back as far as a thousand years BC, with coins testifying to the time of Arabs and Romans.

General and President Franco: A forced journey

In 1949, General Franco issued an order forcing all Acebuchal residents to leave their beloved village. This was all to provide the notorious Spanish police, the Guardia Civil, with a strategic base of operations in their hunt for guerrillas. The original inhabitants were dispersed to nearby villages such as Frigiliana and Competa. Over time, the village deteriorated into ruins until the courageous Antonio el Zumbo decided to revive it.

The miraculous recovery

Antonio El Zumbo, once one of Acebuchal's own residents, went all out to revive the village. In 1998, the first house was revived, and after seven years of diligent work, the project was complete. Although much of the village has been revived, a few houses still stand as silent witnesses to the past.
